Agartala : Preliminary reports suggest the senior IPS officer may have died by suicide. However, authorities have not officially confirmed the cause of death, and an investigation is underway.
Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar was found dead in his office in the state police headquarters in Agartala on Monday.
The 1994-batch IPS officer was rushed to Govind Ballabh Pant (G B Pant) Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at 12.48 pm, sources who spoke to TNIE confirmed.
The circumstances surrounding Dhankar's death were not immediately known, and officials are yet to issue a detailed statement.
Meanwhile, news agency PTI, citing an official, reported that Dhankar died by suicide. TNIE has not independently verified this claim.
The incident triggered a high-level response, with Chief Minister Manik Saha, Chief Secretary J K Sinha and several senior police and government officials rushing to the police headquarters before proceeding to the hospital.
A 1994-batch IPS officer of the Tripura cadre, Dhankar assumed charge as the state's Director General of Police in May 2025. During his career, he held several key positions in the Tripura Police and also served on deputation with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Border Security Force (BSF).
