Hyderabad: Ever since their 23-year-old daughter went missing, Swaroopa Reddy and Yadagiri Reddy Koya haven’t been able to sleep. Their last conversation with Sreeja Reddy Koya was on November 2.

“She was at a birthday party. I could hear a lot of noise. She asked me if I had eaten, and I asked the same. When asked whether she would eat at home, Sreeja said, ‘I will eat and sleep early,'” the worried mother told The New Indian Express.

Seerja is a student at the University of Massachusetts Boston in the United States. On the night she went missing, she stepped out for a walk, which, according to her family, was unusual.

“We were surprised to hear that. She is usually very careful,” said her mother.

She did not return, prompting her friends to file a missing person’s complaint at the Boston Police Station.

The Boston Police issued a missing person alert on November 4. “The Boston Police Department is actively working to locate Sreeja Koya and urges anyone with information regarding her whereabouts to call 911 or contact District C-11 (Dorchester) Detectives at (617) 343-433,” read a statement.

Her last known location, as per her mobile phone, was in the vicinity of Carson Beach or Harbor Point, the police said in their statement.

Sreeja’s family hails from Telangana’s Nalgonda district. A year ago, she left to the United States to pursue an MS in Finance.

Her last visit back home was in August.

“She was very happy. We were all very happy,” Swaroopa says between her tears. “Had we thought anything was wrong, we wouldn’t have sent her back to the US.”

The Telangana government has expressed concern and urged the Consulate General of India in Boston, the External Affairs Ministry and the Boston Police Department to help trace her.
