Iran Sets Conditions For US Talks, Warns Of ‘Decisive War’ If Demands Rejected

Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said Tehran remains in contact with Qatar, which is acting as a mediator between Iran and Washington. 

“We remain in contact with the mediator Qatar, which has conveyed our conditions to Washington with the aim of ending the war. We are awaiting President Trump’s response,” Rezaei was quoted as saying by Al Jazeera. 

Iran Identifies Three Key Demands Rezaei did not publicly disclose all seven conditions put forward by Tehran. However, he separately identified three demands that Iran wants addressed for the conflict to end. 

These include an immediate halt to fighting on all fronts, the release of Iranian funds currently frozen and an end to the US naval blockade. 

Rezaei said accepting the conditions would be in Washington’s interest and warned that threats from Trump would not change Tehran’s position. 

“It is in Washington’s interest to accept these conditions. Trump’s threats will not achieve any results. We are prepared for a decisive war,” he said. Iran Warns Of Possible US Attack Rezaei also claimed that another US strike against Iran remained a possibility, based on Tehran’s military assessments. 

At the same time, he said Iran was pursuing a strategy aimed at bringing the conflict to an end as quickly as possible. 

According to his remarks, Iran has changed its military planning following earlier rounds of fighting and is now focusing on US naval assets operating from the Persian Gulf through the Gulf of Oman and into the Arabian Sea. 

Rezaei also claimed that Iran had recently tested a multi-warhead anti-ship missile near a US vessel or aircraft carrier, according to Tehran Times. He warned that if Washington launches another attack, Tehran could retaliate against US military bases in the region as well as American commercial interests and companies operating there.

US-Iran War And Mediation Efforts The US-Israeli war with Iran began on February 28, following coordinated air strikes by the governments of Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. 

Iran subsequently retaliated with attacks on US bases across the Gulf, with Washington and Tehran exchanging multiple rounds of strikes. 

Trump has said he hopes the conflict is approaching an end and is expected to meet leaders of six Gulf countries on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. 

Meanwhile, indirect contacts between Iran and the US have continued through regional mediators, including Qatar and Pakistan. 

Pakistan has also been involved in efforts to revive negotiations. An Islamabad-hosted memorandum of understanding expired last month without producing a lasting settlement. 

Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi is expected to travel to Tehran as part of Islamabad’s diplomatic efforts. 

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei has acknowledged Pakistan’s mediation role but said he was unaware of any specific US proposal being carried by Naqvi. 

Iran’s Position On Nuclear Programme Rezaei also said Iran has not decided to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty despite increasing pressure over its nuclear programme. He said Tehran’s nuclear doctrine remains unchanged and that Iran continues to follow a religious decree against developing nuclear weapons. 

However, he warned that continued US actions could eventually lead Tehran to reconsider its position. Iran’s nuclear programme remains a major point of contention in the conflict. 

Washington has said its objective is to prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon, while Iran maintains that its nuclear programme is peaceful.
