Valiant Defence Against World Champions : Indian defence led by veteran goalkeeper Savita Punia put up a valiant performance yet again, but the Paris Olympics gold medallists and three-time defending world champions, the Netherlands, won 2-0 in the first match of the second round of the FIH World Cup in Amstelveen on Friday.
The Indian goalkeepers and defenders, who had saved 12 penalty corners in the previous match against England, prevented the world No. 1 team from playing freely at the packed Wagner Stadium, and the co-hosts could not score a single field goal.
For the Dutch team, which had scored 15 goals in three matches in the first round, Yibbi Jansen scored in the second minute and Frederique Malta in the 38th minute, both from penalty corners. The Netherlands also earned a penalty corner in the final seconds, which was blocked by Savita, along with a couple of attacks in the last quarter.
India now face Australia on Sunday and must win this match to keep their semi-final hopes alive.

However, Deepika's shot hit the first rusher's stick and went wide. India secured a long corner but lost possession. Navneet intercepted an aerial pass in the 22nd minute, but her shot missed the target.
In the 28th minute, the Dutch attacked from the left and passed the ball into the centre of the circle. They attempted a shot in front of goal but were unable to beat Savita. In the next minute, Savita ran forward and blocked Pien Dicke's shot. The ball was still in the circle, and Salima thwarted the rebound.
In the final minute of the second quarter, Beauty Dungdung received a green card, reducing India to 10 players on the field for two minutes. At halftime, the Netherlands held a one-goal lead.
Final Quarter Efforts and Outcome : Having been unable to score for over half an hour, they earned three penalty corners in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Indians made a few attempts but were unable to finish. Losing possession proved costly for the team. Five minutes before the hooter, the Dutch strikers launched repeated attacks on the Indian goal, but Savita remained alert and blocked the initial attempt as well as the rebound.
