Kurnool: Irrigation concerns are intensifying among farmers in Rayalaseema region, with several staging a novel protest on Monday demanding immediate release of water into KC Canal from Muchumarri Lift Irrigation Scheme.
The farmers entered the dry KC Canal wearing noose ropes around their necks to highlight their distress over the worsening water crisis and its impact on standing crops.
They alleged that water was not being released from Muchumarri project into KC Canal despite Srisailam reservoir holding more than 875 feet of water.
Farmers said the canal was being denied its due share, leaving crops to wither, and expressed anguish over the severe difficulties they faced.
They urged the government to intervene immediately to save the standing crops and questioned whether the coalition government was indifferent to their plight.
Warning that the situation could push distressed farmers to extreme steps, they said they would intensify the agitation and be left with no option but to resort to suicides if water was not released at the earliest.
They appealed the authorities to act swiftly and ensure adequate irrigation through the KC Canal.
