Delhi: Self-proclaimed cow vigilante or gau rakshak, Swatantra Bhardwaj proudly claimed that he was roaming freely during the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests, even after attempting murder, as Delhi Police released him following a call from Minister Kapil Mishra.
During the protests on July 20, Bhardwaj brutally assaulted the father of CJP protester Nishu Azad, leaving the Dalit man near death.
“Uska ke sar ka ham sar phaade. aapko pata hai isme kose haap lagta hai? Half murder – 307 (We cracked his head open. Do you know what charge applies to this? Attempted murder—Section 307),” Bhardwaj told podcast host Neha Singh Rathore.
Bhardwaj recounted the day, saying Nishu’s father had seven stitches on his head and he was taken to the hospital in an ambulance in a near-death state. His daughter was standing outside the police station, threatening to consume poison if her father did not get justice, he said.
“Yet the very next day I was out; I didn’t even go to jail,” Bhardwaj said, smiling. The cow vigilante said he was roaming around the city “freely all night.”
He explained how he “escaped” going to jail, thanking Lord Hanuman first, and police officers reportedly received a call from Kapil Mishra, who serves as the Law and Order Minister under the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Delhi government.
“Kapil Mishra bade bhaiya hai apne (Kapil Mishra is like an elder brother to me),” adding that even Union Minister Chirag Piswan is like his “bade bhaiya.”
“Modi ji bhi apne bade bhai hain. Sabka support hai (Modi ji is also like an elder brother to me. I have everyone’s support),” Bhardwaj claimed.
During the one-hour podcast interview, he used slurs like Mullah and Mullani to describe Muslim men and women. He said the only party he would create is “Mulla Mukt Bharat” (Mullah-free India) because if Muslims leave India, then “automatically India would be free of Jihad, Love jihad, land jihad, toilet jihad, thook jihad.”
The Delhi Police rejected allegations of political interference, saying the accused were dealt with according to the law.
New Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Sharma said Kumar was injured by the kada (metal bracelet) worn by one of the alleged participants in the scuffle.
“On June 23, at Jantar Mantar, during the CJP protest, Sanjay Kumar, 38, a resident of Ghaziabad, sustained a head injury by Kada worn by one of the alleged assailants during a scuffle,” Sharma said.
“Any allegation of undue influence or interference in the matter is factually incorrect and baseless. The matter has been dealt with strictly in accordance with law and procedures,” Sharma said.
Calling it “outrageous impunity,” CJP chief spokesperson Saurav Das said the Delhi Police releasing the “goon” was illegal interference.
Outrageous impunity! This goon attempted murder of a Dalit man and while in Police custody, made calls to Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra for his release and to pressure them to not add section 307. This is illegal interference with Police investigation.

He said that while Bhardwaj was released, peaceful protesters at Jantar Mantar were being made to read the rulebook, beaten up, threatened with cases, and FIRs were also registered.
“Why should Kapil Mishra not resign for protecting a potential murderer and be a co-accused as an accessory to a crime? Had he not interfered, the Delhi Police ought to have arrested Bhardwaj and his gang!” Das said.
He said he and other members will visit the Parliament Street police station on Friday (September 4) seeking action against Bhardwaj.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke separately accused the Delhi Police of failing to act against those allegedly involved in the Jantar Mantar attack.
“DCP Sachin Sharma gave a free pass to the goons at Jantar Mantar, refusing to take action or arrest any of them. When our representatives went to speak to him, he threatened them, saying, ‘Ek baar tum aur Dipke haath lago, will beat you black and blue’,” he claimed.
Dipke further alleged that Sharma was the same officer who allowed a truck loaded with stones to be parked at Jantar Mantar before the march.
“He is the blue-eyed boy of the regime,” Dipke said.
Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said Home Minister Amit Shah has no qualms in protecting a man for attempting to murder a Dalit.
“Amit Shah’s Delhi Police, on one hand, commits inhuman brutality against students. On the other hand, the criminal who smashed the head of a Dalit girl’s father is roaming freely in the open,” he said.
“Narendra Modi ji, Amit Shah ji – Why does such a criminal have the protection of you and the people in your party? Will there be action now, or will you keep shielding someone?” he asked.
“Nishu, there’s no need to panic. I’m with you. It’s clear that you’re being targeted because you raise your voice for the rights of your community and students,” he extended his support to Nishu on X.
Responding to Gandhi’s post, Nishu said, “I didn’t expect that Rahul Gandhi ji would actually tweet about it. Now that I’ve got the support of a big leader like Rahul Gandhi ji, I’ll get justice, and Swatantra Bhardwaj will have to go to jail.”
In her video message, she said that a video of Swatantra Bhardwaj is being circulated, where he himself admits that he caused head injuries to her father and that he should have been booked under Section 307 for attempt to murder.
“When he caused head injuries to my father, we got an FIR lodged against him, but the police are not taking any action on it even though over 1.5 months have passed.
“The police are not doing anything and are befooling us in the name of medical examination. We have lost all hope… I now pin my hopes on Rahul Gandhi. I have hope that Rahul Gandhi will help me get justice,” she said.
“Such people (attackers) should be in jail, especially those who do not admit their mistakes and are instead proudly telling people about their deeds.
“Really, I request you Rahul Gandhi ji. I need your help. Please help me get justice,” she said.
