Srinagar: Five militants have been killed in two separate gunfights with security forces in militancy-hit south Kashmir in Jammu and Kashmir while a top militant commander is trapped.
A police official said a joint contingent of police, CRPF and Army launched a search and combing operation in Nawbugh area of Tral in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district in the early hours today after receiving inputs about the presence of militants there.
He said during the search operation, militants fired on the troops. The fire was returned by the troops, triggering an encounter.In the ensuing firefight, two militants have been killed so far, the police official said.He said the operation was going on when reports last poured in.
In a separate gunfight, three militants have been killed in a gunfight with security forces in Shopian, also in south Kashmir.The gunfight had started yesterday evening and three militants have been killed so far, a police spokesman said.Three army jawans have been injured in the gunfight and they have been hospitalized.
The police spokesman said the chief commander of AGuH (Jaish-e-Mohammad) militant outfit was trapped in the encounter.The spokesman said the brother of the holed-up militant and local Imam (cleric) were sent inside a mosque, where the militants are hiding, to persuade them to surrender and lay down weapons.
“Efforts are on to save the mosque,” he said adding the operation is going on.
